AGERE Takes First Step in Coffee Capsule Waste Management

19, Nov 24 | Updates

Today, AGERE initiated a significant step in managing coffee capsule waste by delivering the first specialized collection containers to the parish councils of Maximinos and Lomar, as well as to municipal companies in Braga. This initiative, promoted by AGERE in collaboration with the Industrial and Commercial Coffee Association (AICC), is part of the Recaps campaign, aiming to promote the recycling and recovery of such waste.

With the availability of these specific containers, residents can now deposit their used coffee capsules, enabling the recycling of materials such as plastic, aluminum, and coffee grounds. This selective collection system addresses the high number of coffee capsules placed on the market — approximately 2 billion annually — many of which end up in general waste.

For Rui Sá Morais, Chairman of AGERE’s Board of Directors, this is a strategic step toward sustainability. “Our goal is to remove from general waste everything that has recovery potential. We are starting with coffee capsules, but we’ll also extend this effort to other waste streams, such as textile waste and hazardous waste. This is our way of contributing to a more circular and sustainable economy,” he emphasized.

The Recaps campaign, with the slogan “Braga Gives New Life to Your Coffee Capsules,” will expand to more parishes and schools across Braga by the end of the year. The collection will be managed by AGERE’s services, which, in collaboration with the AICC, will ensure the waste is sent to recycling centers where it will be transformed into new products.
