Solidarity and sustainability joined forces in AGERE’s latest initiative, which mobilized the school community of Braga and resulted in the collection of around 3,000 toys. With the contribution of local kindergartens, the donated toys were given a new purpose and delivered to various local social institutions, where they will surely continue to bring smiles.
The response from kindergartens and families highlights the importance of raising awareness from an early age about sharing, reuse, and the promotion of values such as empathy and social responsibility. The “Magic Container” brought joy to the children who received the toys, while also reinforcing the importance of giving toys a second life and reducing waste.
Toy consumption has increased significantly in recent years, with many toys made from hard-to-recycle materials, such as mixed plastics, synthetic fabrics, and electronic components. Statistics show that a large percentage of toys have a short lifespan, being quickly discarded and sent to landfills. It is estimated that millions of tonnes of toys end up as waste each year, contributing significantly to environmental pollution and the depletion of natural resources.
By encouraging donation and reuse, the “Magic Container” initiative helped extend the useful life of the collected toys, reducing their environmental impact. These items were still in good condition and able to bring joy to other children, avoiding the need for new production and, consequently, the use of additional resources.
The reuse of toys fits into the concept of the circular economy, which promotes waste reduction by reintroducing products into the consumption cycle. Instead of discarding unused toys, they can be donated, repaired, or transformed, maximizing their lifespan and minimizing negative environmental effects.
AGERE expresses its gratitude to the kindergartens that joined this cause and helped demonstrate that small actions can have a big impact. Initiatives like this show that sustainability education can start in early childhood, encouraging more conscious and compassionate habits for future generations.
