AGERE has received approval for its application to the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) for the construction of the Biomethane Production Plant at the Frossos Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in Braga. The project was awarded a merit score of 5.1, obtaining the second-highest ranking among the submitted proposals, and will receive funding of €1,591,201.56.
This innovative project aims to produce biomethane from the biogas generated at the Frossos WWTP, to be injected into the public natural gas grid (RPGN). Biogas production will be carried out through the anaerobic digestion of wastewater treatment sludge, combined with the co-digestion of organic waste. The biomethane plant, with an installed capacity of 3.50 MW, will be capable of supplying the equivalent of the energy consumption of more than 11,000 households, while also contributing to a significant reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, estimated at 6,010 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per year.2 equivalente por ano.
Furthermore, the project includes the reinforcement of the existing photovoltaic plant at the WWTP, ensuring the energy sustainability of the process, as well as the restructuring of the Sludge Line to optimise biogas production and improve sludge quality, enabling its use for agricultural purposes.
With construction set to begin in 2025 and full operation expected by 2026, the Biomethane Production Plant represents an important step towards energy transition, the promotion of a circular economy, and the strengthening of energy security in Braga and across the country.
