CRO – What drives us

The services provided by the CRO focus on 3 axes: sanitary control, health and animal welfare.

Health Control
Monitor serious zoonoses, such as rabies, and control their spread.
Animal Health
Ensuring animal health is a priority for CRO. An animal on the street, without the protection of its owner, has serious difficulties in accessing water, food and shelter.
Animal Welfare
The CRO promotes responsible ownership and relocation of animals by transferring them to another owner, contributing to improving animal welfare.

Vet check

The Municipality of Braga, in partnership with the Portuguese Medical Association, participates in the National Program to Support Veterinary Health for Pets at Risk. This program ensures the provision of assistance to needy families, namely through the Veterinary Check.
What is a veterinary check?
The Veterinary Check aims to provide health care to Animals at Risk. Among other treatments, the check refers to vaccination, deworming, sterilization and 24-hour emergencies.

The activities covered by this Program focus on the implementation of the Veterinary Health Care Plan (PCSV) for Animals at Risk. This is done by granting Veterinary Checks to Stray Animals captured by Official Collection Centers (CRO); Cat colonies under the responsibility of the local authority; Animals from needy families (duly identified by the Municipality).

Veterinary emergency

The CRO has a veterinary emergency vehicle, which is available 24 hours a day, under the responsibility of the Braga Firefighters.

The service is provided in conjunction with the police authorities, the Official Collection Center (CRO), the municipality's veterinarian and 2 veterinary hospitals in the municipality.

Veterinary Emergency Number: 253 278 488

Caring for your Pet

Are you thinking about adopting?

Animals adopted at the Braga Official Collection Centre (CRO) are subject to an internal and external vaccination and deworming protocol. All animals over 6 months of age are sterilised and given up for responsible adoption with electronic identification and registration with SIAC. In compliance with current legislation, unless they are under 3 months old, animals leave with anti-rabies vaccination.

Animals under this age are accompanied by a temporary exemption certificate from sterilization (MVM document). All animals that for medical reasons are unable to comply with current legislation (rabies vaccination, electronic identification or others) are accompanied by the respective medical certificate of temporary exemption.

At the time of adoption, the owner signs the adoption liability term and additional clarification on the animal adoption process.

Adoption visits are subject to prior appointment.

From Monday to Friday, between 2pm and 5pm

Requirement 01

Are you ready for a long-term commitment?

On average, a pet has an estimated lifespan of between 15 and 20 years. Therefore, it is important that, when you decide to adopt, you reflect on possible changes and unforeseen events that life will bring. That said, the animal should be considered an integral part of the family.

Requirement 02

Why do you want to adopt a pet? Is there consensus in the family?

You must make sure that everyone with a say in the matter agrees to the addition of an animal to the family.

Requirement 03

Do you have time to dedicate to an animal?

Having a pet means having time to feed it, walk it (in the case of a dog), provide hygiene care, train it and keep it company every day.

Requirement 04

Are you willing to accept unforeseen events and “accidents”?

Scratched furniture, chewed objects, urine in the house and veterinary emergencies are situations inherent to having a pet and which we must be prepared to accept naturally.

Requirement 05

Are you prepared to responsibly care for and educate an animal?

Taking care of a pet responsibly involves measures such as always walking it on a leash, never letting it wander outside the home, providing veterinary assistance whenever necessary, identifying it, keeping it safe and providing it with all the care it needs in terms of food and water, exercise and space.

Requirement 06

Who will take care of the animal when you are away?

Make sure you have trusted family or friends who will take responsibility for your care.

Requirement 01

Are you ready for a long-term commitment?

Requirement 02

Why do you want to adopt a pet? Is there consensus in the family?
